Monsters University Gets An A
Disney always seems to be able find both heart and soul in their Pixar animated movies. Monsters University is no exception. A lovely colorful film, Monsters University picks up where Monsters Inc. left off with Mike Wazowski (played by Billy Crystal) set to attend Monsters University to embark on a quest to become a student within the “scarer program.” There, he meets up with the blue loveable natural scare monster, James Sullivan (John Goodman), otherwise known as Sulley.
In order to stay qualified for the scarer program, Mike and his newly found friends and team mates have to go through a series of tests in order to be accepted. This tests and challenges transpire under the watchful scornful eye of Dean Handscrabble (Helen Mirren).
What I loved about the film: the cinematic graphics and artistry are beautiful. Lots of vibrant colors, nicely designed characters, interesting lighting and vantage points. I also enjoyed the story’s message about perseverance and the ability to dream and set goals even if the odds are stacked against you. Disney films always maintain some sense of innocence, even after the hard lessons have been learned. The characters are likeable, and Monsters University could probably be seen by kids of all ages. It’s very family-friendly.
We didn’t see it in 3-D and I think that the extra few bucks would be worth it since the visuals are such a great part of the Monsters University experience. The 3D showings we found were all early afternoon, there were no evening times when we went to see it.
We highly recommend Monsters University and think it will put a smile on everyone in your family’s faces.
